The future of assessing and quality assurance qualifications

An update on Assessor, IQA and EQA qualifications

An update from the Education and Training Foundation has given some clear guidance on the future of the Level 3 Assessor, Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance and Level 4 External Quality Assurance suite of qualifications.

Following a recent survey of Awarding Organisations (AOs) on whether to update the assessor and quality assurance suite of qualifications, the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) has issued a letter to suggest that these qualifications are extended with a view to reviewing them for 2024.

This decision has been made on account of the current COVID-related disruption in the sector as well as the anticipated review of initial teacher education qualifications (ITE) and the development of standards by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education for 2024.

How will this impact you?

The good news is there will be no significant impact on your if you either hold or are working towards one of the assessing or quality assurance qualifications. If you were waiting on an update to the standards before starting a qualification the wait will go on until the consultation takes place in 2024.

My thoughts are that the delay in an update makes sense and it will be aligned with the planned update for teacher training qualifications (AET, CET, DET) so everything can be reviewed in 2024 with any new versions of these qualifications coming out at a similar time. This will / should avoid any confusion about these qualifications over the coming two years.

In the meantime our programmes are fully available to anyone  wanting to undertake an Assessor, Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) or External Quality Assurance (EQA) qualification. To find out more check out our qualifications page.

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (known as the DET) is the current, up to date Level 5 teaching qualification. This was introduced in 2014 and replaced the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS). The DET sits within the Education and Training suite of qualifications, alongside the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) and the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET). The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training has been and still is a very flexible and valuable qualification for vocational Teachers, Trainers and Tutors to gain, opening up opportunities for employment and linked to QTLS. The structure of the qualification units provides bespoke pathways for learners to follow, based on their own role or how they want to develop.
